Going Backwards to Move Forward

A 60 Second Insight

  • Going Bankrupt
  • Accepting a job or project for which you're overqualified
  • Moving to smaller brand or lower status role
  • Taking a slight pay cut
  • Leaving self-employment to become an employee again
  • Downshifting to a smaller property and more modest lifestyle
Research any highly successful person's history and you will usually find someone that went backwards before they took a leap forward to the next level.

Before becoming big successes, Walt Disney, Richard Branson, Steve Jobs and Simon Cowell were all forced to take backwards steps. Whilst on the surface it looked negative, the backward step was actually the making of them.

Going backwards allowed them to get to know themselves better and focus on what they really wanted in the next stage of their career and lives. Going backwards, whilst a little embarrassing initially, actually gave them the space, time and focus to get to the next level of their careers. It's a place they had to go in order to move forward.

So if you're stuck in a place where you too are considering a backward step - just remember that going backwards is not always negative, It could well be the first step in helping you meet a great new contact, develop a new business idea or brand new lifestyle for you.

Success (however you define it) - is never a straight line journey.

The dips and troughs along the way are there to teach us vital lessons. So don't let your ego and the fear of "what everyone will think" stop you learning those lessons and avoid taking a backwards step which could help you move forward.
